Tata Communications will focus on the home and small and medium enterprise (SME) segments for its planned WiMAX rollout later in the year. The company is looking to offer voice and other value-added services on high-speed wireless broadband and will not target mobile users initially.
The company would launch services such as voice, video-on-demand, etc, if all the required regulatory policies are in place by the end of the year. Tata Comm will base its service on the mobile (e) version of the WiMAX standard, which supports mobile terminals for voice and data like smart phones do but at a fraction of the cost. However, since it is a new technology, most original equipment manufacturers, including Samsung and Nokia, are yet to finalise their mobile device offerings on the platform. Also, SMEs do not have dedicated high-speed service. So we believe that delivering it at a fixed location in itself is a huge opportunity.
